SXSW in Austin
By miranda | March 15, 2008
Wow, what a great time! I don’t know where to begin: the city, the weather, the energy… but I guess since we came here for the music, I should start with the music.
We have managed to see alot of bands, even though the first two nights we cut out early after tiring ourselves out in the afternoon (tequila shots played a part in our downfall on thursday). Yesterday was a great day all around, with some terrific acts in the afternoon capped off with high-energy performances at night to keep us going late. Some notable new names are: Eagle Seagull, Firewater, World Inferno, Russian Futurists, Grady, Ha Ha Tonka, Ra Ra Riot, and Afenginn. We’ve also enjoyed our tried and tested favourites Eliot Brood and Luke Doucet.
All of this has taken place in a climate that has changed from springlike to all-out summer heat over the course of our 4-day stay. Yesterday afternoon was spent at a back alley party made bearable by a shade tent and free beer, but even in the evening we felt the need to escape the heat for awhile by ducking into a cool dark blues bar for a frosty drink.
The town itself is great too, though it’s hard to judge how it might be under normal circumstances, as a festival town it’s quite friendly and welcoming. As one would expect of a music festival that encompasses all styles, it also attracts all kinds of people. For example, to really stand out here, it isn’t enough just to have tattoo sleeves on both arms and both legs, even a tattooed neck is pretty commonplace. No, the way to set yourself apart is to have tiger stripes all over the body, including the face. Now that’s unique. Oh, and she was pushing a baby carriage.
Ahh, there is so much more to tell, but no time, for there is more music waiting to be heard.

It was so great. Something that, if it was closer, would be pretty tough to resist going to every year.
